2013 Speech

Hello, my name is Keri Goldman, I am the President and Founder of Paws 4 A Cure. Please bare with me as I have no voice.

Thank you for coming out to the 6th Annual Paws 4 A Cure Walk. Your support means the world to me. In 2002, my Chow Chow Nikko was diagnosed with cancer and there were not organizations out there to financially help me. I sold everything that I owned that I did not need and ate out of food banks so that Nikko could get the care that he needed. I went without because my fur son needed me to care for him and he came first. In 2007 after almost 6 years of battling 2 different cancers, Adenocarcinoma and Melanoma with surgeries and treatments, Nikko left my arms and went to the Rainbow Bridge. I do not say died because died is so final. I say left my arms because Nikko will be back in my arms eternally one day along with his sister Chee that went to be with him in 2011. In 2008 I created Paws 4 A Cure to help me through my devastating loss of my first born fur child and because I knew that there were others out there like myself that could not afford the high cost of veterinary care when an emergency arose.

With supporters like you, we are on our 6th year and have now paid out just shy of $70,000 to help the Paws Recipients get the care that they needed. If you have not had a chance to look at our Paws Recipient page, please visit the Paws 4 A Cure booth to see some of the past and current Paws Recipients. With the proceeds from today’s event, Paws 4 A Cure will be able to help so many more dogs and cats that are in need of our help, thank you for helping to keep my dream a reality.

I want to thank the amazing businesses and rescue groups that have come out today to support Paws 4 A Cure. I want to thank Angell Animal Hospital and Unleashed by Petco for their friendship corporate sponsorship. I thank the awesome businesses that donated services and supplies to make the event great.

I would like thank all the amazing fundraisers, you did such great work to raise money. I would like to have Team Hot Flash come up to the Paws 4 A Cure tent after they come back from their walk. Team Hot Flash has raised over $5,000! I have a gift for Team Hot Flash to show Paws 4 A Cure’s appreciation for your outstanding fundraising! Please give all the fundraisers a round of applause.

Each year we have a memorial balloon release. The names that you see on the balloons are of their loved ones at the Rainbow Bridge to send a message to let them know that they have not been forgotten. I would like to take a moment of silence to remember those that have gone before us……you are so missed. Please release your balloons.

Team Wilson please join come up to kick off the walk. Wilson is our grand marshall for today’s walk. Wilson is a cancer survivor. I ask that everyone follow Wilson as we start our journey around the lake to support Paws 4 A Cure. If you or your dog are unable to do the entire 3 miles, the Friendly Paws shuttle service will pick you up and bring you back here. Please raise your hand when you see the shuttle coming if you need pick up service.

Thank you again for coming out today. Please come back after your walk to visit the vendor booths that you may have missed. And please come to introduce yourself to me as I would like to thank each of you personally for your support. Now let’s walk!
